É um epitélio estratificado, queratinizado escamoso que reveste a superfície vestibular e palatina da gengiva. regiao externa da gengiva Estendes-se da junção mucogengival à margem gengival ,com exceção da superfície palatina onde comina-se com o epitélio palatino.
O epitélio oral consiste em uma camada basal , uma camada espinhosa , camada granular e uma camada cornificada.
É projetado principalmente para proteção contra injúrias mecânicas durante a mastigação. Resistência à injúria mecânica é mediada principalmente pelas numerosas junções intercelulares, principalmente os desmossomos , que se une às células e a camada córnea. A camada córnea e os espaços de intercellular relativamente estreitos também contribuem à relativa falta de permeabilidade.
